Nepal has vivid cultural diversity and many vibrant festivals are celebrated during the year. Most of the festivals celebrated in Nepal have religious connotation and some are based on important events from ancient mythology and epic literature.
Nepal is not only the land of mountains, it is also the land of festivals. There is a saying that there are more festivals in Nepal then the days around the year. There are more than 50 major festivals celebrated in Nepal every year. National festivals have fixed dates, religious festivals are set by astrologers following the lunar calendar.
Nepalese have diverse beliefs and ethnic backgrounds. Despite these facts, all unite in the celebration of the year’s major festivals. Festivals such as Dashain and Tihar are of national significance, and have national holidays. Some festivals such as Rato Machchhendranath Jatra, Seto Machchhendranath Jatra, Bisket Jatra belongs to the traditions of a certain place and community. And some other festivals like Chaat are celebrated by a particular ethnic community with great value and enthusiasm.
The best part about the festivals in Nepal is that all the events are celebrated with same enthusiasm and galore the way it used to be hundreds of years ago.
Cultural acts, dances and songs are integral parts of some celebrations while some celebrations are just family gatherings. Celebrations of festivals like Ghode Jatra, Gai Jatra, Bisket Jatra entertain participants and spectators every year.
